Leibniz-Institut for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS)

3 year scientist position in cloud radiation budget observations and modeling

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.

Its satellite remote sensing work group is offering a 3 year position for a PostDoc (based on tarif TV-L E13, full time) as a contribution to the

BMBF-fundedproject „High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Climate Prediction, HD-(CP)²“.

The successful candidate will operate a set of ground-based pyranometers to obtain the cloud-induced spatial and temporal variability of downwelling solar radiation.

Data from synchronizedradar, microwave radiometer and sky imager measurements shall be converted to time-series of three-dimensional cloud properties,

which in turn shall be utilized in existing 3d Monte-Carlo radiative transfer models to close the radiative flux measurements.

Data from high resolution cloud models will bemade available for further cloud-radiation closure studies. Cloud and radiation data will be measured during an intensive

field campaign in spring 2013. The position requires active participation in preparation and performance of the field campaign including set-up and maintenance of the pyranometer set.

The work will be carried out in cooperation with observational and modelling partnerinstitutions throughout Germany, and provides an excellent opportunity to work at the boundary

between in-situ-measurements, ground-based remote sensing, and atmospheric modelling.

An excellent candidate with a PhD degree in Meteorology, (Atmospheric) Physics or Mathematics is sought.

Fluency in English and the ability to clearly present research results both in spoken and written form are essential.

Experimental and programming skills (preferably Fortran) are highly desirable.

Interested candidates should send a complete application, including CV, cover letter, certificates and contact information for one reference via mail or as a single PDF document by e-mail.

Review of applications will begin October 15, 2012, and continue until the position is filled. Employment should start no later than Jan 1st, 2013.

Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.

TROPOS is committed to increase the fraction of female scientists and particularly encourages qualified female applicants to apply.
