Gutenberg-University Mainz, Germany

Ice processes in clouds - investigations using multiscale asymptotics

Project summary:

This project is part of the new initiative "HD(CP)2: High definition clouds and
precipitation for advancing climate prediction" of the German Ministry for
Education and Research (BMBF), which is dedicated to theoretical investigations
and high-resolution climate modelling (spatial resolution of order O(100 m))
aiming at advanced parametrisations for the representation of clouds and
precipitation in coarser models.

In this project ice processes in clouds will be investigated using methods of
multiscale asymptotics. For this purpose, equations for dynamics in atmospheric
flows will be coupled with cloud microphysics including the ice phase. In the
course of the asymptotic analysis, characteristic length and time scales and
associated dominant processes on these scales will be identified. The new
findings and related reduced sets of equations will be applied for some typical
situations, essential for our understanding of processes and feedbacks in
clouds containing ice particles.

This project is collaboration between Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
(Prof. Peter Spichtinger) and Freie Universitaet Berlin (Prof. Rupert Klein),
the position is located at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany.

This project has a duration of 3 years, starting preferably in January 2013.
The salary for this position will be 100% E13 TVL.

Required qualifications are:
- PhD in meteorology/atmospheric physics (theoretical meteorology), applied
mathematics (mathematical modelling) or engineering (theoretical fluid dynamics)
- Experience in a higher programming language
- Interest in interaction of dynamics and cloud processes

Desirable qualifications would be:
- Experience in asymptotic analysis and/or
- Modelling of moist processes, including ice phase

Applications with CV and names of 2-3 references should be sent via email to
Prof. Peter Spichtinger ( and Prof. Rupert Klein
( Applications will be screened immediately
until the position is filled.
