North Carolina State University

Postdoctoral Research Scholar

The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) is a
research institute formed through a consortium of academic, non-profit
and community organizations with leadership from the University of
Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and North Carolina State University (NCSU)
on behalf of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System. CICS
provides foci for collaborative research and associated activities in
support of NOAA mission goals related to meteorological satellite and
climate data and information research and development.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

Support NC State University’s North Carolina Institute for Climate
Studies (NCICS) and NOAA’s NCDC land surface temperature validation
effort – validation of the Land Surface Temperature (LST) product
derived from the Visible/Infrared imager Radiometric Suite (VIIRS)
onboard NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) and Joint Polar Satellite
System (JPSS) satellites for a 2-3 year period.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Support NC State University’s North Carolina Institute for Climate
Studies (NCICS) and NOAA’s NCDC land surface temperature validation
effort to include the following responsibilities and duties:
- Validate satellite Land Surface Temperature (LST) products through
intercomparison with other heritage datasets (MODIS, etc) and in situ
based measurements (USCRN, Ameriflex, etc);
- evaluate and refine model algorithms using field and remotely sensed
data;
- develop and/or refine existing tools for monitoring satellite product
uncertainties to automate the optimization of a large-scale processing
system;
- establish, in near real time, the accuracy of satellite products at
moderate resolution (approx 1-2 km) over multiple validation sites for
algorithm working groups and the science user community

Other Work/Responsibilities

- other related duties as assigned

- occasional overnight travel may be required.

Minimum Experience/Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate
field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of
postdoctoral appointment.

Department Required Skills

Ph.D. in geosciences discipline, environmental sciences, remote sensing,
or related field. Experience working with in situ surface and remotely
sensed observations and understanding of land surface processes and
radiative transfer. Demonstrated computer programming proficiency
utilizing standard JAVA, PHP, Perl, Python, JavaScript, FORTRAN, C, C++,
etc. Solid data processing/data analysis skills with working knowledge
of Matlab and/or IDL.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$47,000-$50,000
