========================================================
Postdoctoral fellowship in sea ice modelling available at UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve
========================================================

The Georges Lemaître Centre for Earth and Climate Research (TECLIM; www.uclouvain.be/teclim) / Earth and Life Institute of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for participation to the EU FP7 project EMBRACE (Earth system model bias reduction and assessing abrupt climate change; www.smhi.se/embrace/). The key goal of this project is to improve our ability to simulate the Earth system, thereby enabling more reliable projections of future climate. This will provide policy makers with a more concrete evidence base on which to develop climate change adaptation and mitigation policies, both at regional and global scales.

The research will consist in contributing to the implementation and validation of an elasto-brittle sea ice rheology in version 3 of the Louvain-la-Neuve sea ice model (LIM3; http://www.elic.ucl.ac.be/repomodx/lim/index.php?id=49) coupled to the NEMO (Nucleous for European Modelling of the Ocean; www.nemo-ocean.eu) modelling platform for oceanographic research, operational oceanography, seasonal forecast and climate studies.

This work will be done in collaboration with the Laboratoire de Glaciologie et de Géophysique de l'Environnement, Grenoble and other European laboratories involved or not in EMBRACE. Frequent visits to those laboratories are expected.

The candidates should have a PhD in large-scale sea ice and/or ocean modelling. Expertise in sea ice rheology will be a plus.

The position is offered for 1 year. The salary will be commensurate with experience according to the UCL rates.

Expected date for entry on duty: beginning of December 2012.

Applicants should send (i) a statement of research experience, qualifications and interests, (ii) a complete CV including a list of publications, and (iii) contact information for three references via e-mail to Prof. Thierry Fichefet (thierry.fichefet@uclouvain.be).

Review of applications will begin on September 17, 2012 and continue until the position is filled.
