Title: Agroclimatic scenarios over France and Europe

Project: ORACLE (https://oracle.lsce.ipsl.fr/)

The ORACLE (Opportunities and risks of agrosystems and forests in response to climate, socio-economic and policy changes in France and Europe) project (2011-2015), co-funded by Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR), aims at assessing the capability of the agricultural and forest production to adapt to climate change, in
France and Europe.

CNRM is developing SURFEX, a modelling platform able to simulate the hydrological cycle together with the terrestrial carbon fluxes and the vegetation biomass. SURFEX includes a generic photosynthesis and plant growth model (ISBA-A-gs) and has a simplified representation of agricultural practices. ISBA-A-gs is able to represent the
impact of CO2 on photosynthesis and plant growth.

The task of the post-doctorate fellow will consist in running the SURFEX platform over France (8km x 8km) and over Europe (50km x 50km), forced by the atmospheric variables produced by climate models for the 21st century. The biophysical variables produced by ISBA-A-gs (leaf area index, equilibrium forest biomass, leaf onset and offset, …) and their trends will be analyzed. The impact of uncertainties in the model parameters
and in the climate scenarios will be assessed.
The comparison with other approaches (e.g. the IPSL ORCHIDEE
model) will permit the evaluation of the conceptual model uncertainty and solutions
to improve the model will be proposed.

A deliverable of the study will be a report describing the simulated biophysical variables
per vegetation type over France and (time permitting) over Europe,
and the identification of potential hot-spots.

The net monthly salary will vary from about 1900 € to 3000 € before income tax,
depending on qualification.

The candidate should have knowledge on 2D modelling using
geoscience models, preferably in the field of agriculture and forestry. He/She should be familiar with the FORTRAN programming language, the Linux environment, and have
notions of graphic softwares (PVWave, Matlab, or IDL).
