Intern, Catastrophe Response – RMS London – 12 weeks (Start date 1st July 2012)

RMS is the world's leading provider of mathematical models and software for the
quantification and management of catastrophe risks. The RMS models and
consulting services are used by hundreds of insurance and reinsurance
companies, hedge funds, corporations and governments to assess a wide-range of
natural and man-made perils such as hurricane, earthquake, flood, windstorm,
terrorism and disease pandemic.

RMS is now hiring for an intern to sit in the Catastrophe Response group, part
of the Model Products Management team based in London. This group is
responsible for monitoring and responding to all global natural catastrophic
events that have the potential to impact the insurance industry. This involves
providing our clients with detailed analytics on the extent and severity of
damage to help them assess their losses.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an interest in the business
applications of science and engineering. Responsibilities and projects that the
intern will work on during the 12 week period include:

• Supporting our real-time catastrophe response operations, aimed at providing
our clients with up-to-date damage and impact assessments whenever a major
hurricane, earthquake, flood or other catastrophic event occurs; • Monitoring
world-wide catastrophic events on a daily basis and producing written event
summaries to tight daily deadlines that will appeal to a wide-based readership;
• Providing detailed impact analyses of affected regions, involving querying
statistical databases of the building stock, producing maps and generating loss
estimates using RMS catastrophe models; • Creating a database containing
statistics of historical hurricanes, typhoons and other natural catastrophe
perils • Analysing product user statistics to gain insight into our most
valuable deliverables

Essential Requirements:

• An MSc/Masters qualification or equivalent in a natural science, or other
related field, preferably combined with relevant work experience; • A high
level of proficiency in data analysis and data manipulation software tools
(Excel, Access). A knowledge of GIS software applications (preferably ESRI
products) would be a bonus; • A flair for map design and good writing skills; •
A fast learner with strong organisational skills, combined with close attention
to detail; • The ability to work effectively under pressure, to be flexible and
to multi-task (this role involves working to very tight deadlines and
significant cross-organisational interaction)

Please apply with a cover letter and CV, stating where you have seen this role
advertised, via the career page on www.rms.com<http://www.rms.com>. RMS is
proud to be an equal opportunity employer.

Thank you in advance

Kindest Regards
