Title: Planetary scale waves and gravity waves in the tropical
A 1-2 year post doc position is available at LMD/IPSL to work on the stratospheric dynamics in the equatorial regions. The candidate will analyse the stratospheric dynamics simulated by the Atmospheric General Circulation Model (AGCM), by giving a particular emphasis to the parameterization of the gravity waves in the model, and to their interaction with the planetary scale equatorial waves. In relation with the UK met-office and Météo-France the candidate will compare the performance of various parameterizations of the subgrid scale waves, that is a multiwave stochastic parametrization developed at and the globally spectral parameterization used at the UK Met-Office. During the course of his work, the candidate will try to improve the realism of the simulation of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in the model, he will for instance relate the intensity of gravity waves parameterized to the convection. This known source of gravity waves activity in the tropics is in fact loosely related to the gravity waves schemes in the present day models.
As a possible extension, or according to the candidate motivations, the work can rather consist in assessing the Gravity Waves parameterizations against in-situ balloon flight measurements and meso-scale model simulations.
This position is funded by the EU-FP7 project EMBRACE (Grant agreement number 282672).
