The Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Department of Atmospheric Circulation in Potsdam, is seeking to appoint

2 PhD students.

The starting date is flexible.

The PhD work will include the development of new modules for global chemistry-climate-models.

One PhD will develop a module for extremely fast stratospheric ozone chemistry in the framework of the project FAST-O3. FAST-O3 is a joint project between AWI and the Free University of Berlin and is part of the BMBF programme "Mittelfristige Klimaprognose". The work will be based on the fully lagrangian chemistry-transport-model ATLAS and a prototype for extremely fast polar ozone chemistry (SWIFT). In co-operation with the project partner the new module will be implemented into a global climate model.

The second PhD will develop a sulfur, microphysics and sedimentation module to include the stratospheric sulfur and aerosol cycle as interactive part in a global lagrangian model (ATLAS). The work will be embedded in SSiRC (Stratospheric Sulfur and its Role in Climate) a new international activity of the World Climate Research Program in its SPARC (Stratospheric Processes and their Role in Climate) program. This will lead to a better understanding of the role of the stratospheric aerosol layer in the climate system.

Requirements: The position requires a diploma or master in Natural Sciences, preferable in physics, chemistry, meteorology, or neighbouring fields, as well as computer-skills and the ability to participate in model-development in Fortran. Existing experience in atmospheric physics would be beneficial but is not required.

The position is limited to three years. The salary will be set according to the German collective labour agreement of German public employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst, Entgeltgruppe 13 TVöD-Bund).

For further information, please contact Dr. Markus Rex (Markus.Rex@awi.de, phone: +49 (0)331-288-2127).

Disabled applicants with identical technical and personal suitability will be preferentially selected, please see our notification on our homepage under job offers / jobs.

The AWI supports balanced work-life career development via a variety of alternatives. In Potsdam, a daycare facility is operated on campus.

Please send your application including curriculum vitae and certificates before April 13st 2012 quoting the reference number 27/D/KLI-P to:
