The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen has been working on remote sensing of atmospheric composition from satellite observations since 1995. IUP is one of the leading institutions in the new area of satellite remote sensing of the important greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). IUP currently extends these activities especially in view of the planned future satellite mission CarbonSat. A new focus is modeling of atmospheric greenhouse gas distributions and inverse modeling of CO2 and CH4 surface fluxes (emissions). In this context a new modeling group has recently been established. The PhD student shall develop methods to interpret existing data (e.g., SCIAMACHY, GOSAT) and to analyze simulated data of future missions (CarbonSat) using modeling and inverse modeling techniques.
