Physical Oceanography Post Doc position at Bangor University Web link: http://www.bangor.ac.uk/corporate/vacancies/home.php?jobdetails=1&reference=11-11/101&category2=Academic We are seeking an individual with a strong background in mathematics and physics to join a Bangor University/ Reading University team studying the role of Langmuir circulation and inertial shear spikes in driving mixing within and below the surface mixed layer of the ocean. The team are part of the NERC OSMOSIS Consortium. The investigations will involve collection and analysis of time series water column data and the testing of parameterisations being developed for implementation in state-of-the-art numerical models. The appointee will be directly involved in both the observational work at sea and in the interpretation of both observational and modelled time series data. Ideally, he/she will have a PhD in Physical Oceanography although candidates from other physical science backgrounds will be considered. The appointee will join the 8 strong Turbulence and Mixing group, which includes Prof John Simpson and Prof Steve Thorpe FRS, based at the School of Ocean Sciences (www.sos.bangor.ac.uk). The School, which is among the largest university Marine Science centres in Europe, has a strong tradition of seagoing research and teaching which is facilitated by ready access to the University?s purpose-built research vessel, the Prince Madog. The successful candidate will be expected to start 01st February 2012 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and this post is available for a period of 3 years.
