Senior Defence Data Assimilation Research Scientist

Intro :

Salary: Starting £25,500 and for exceptional candidates up to £31,500 or £29,930 and for exceptional candidates up to £38,325 + competitive benefits, including Civil Service Pension

Background information

The Defence customer requires the best quality NWP Crisis Area Models to support operations. The postholder will assist in the development, testing, and maintenance of data assimilation capabilities for high resolution theatre scale models. The initial focus will be to develop a ~4km three-dimensional variational (3D-VAR) data assimilation system to replace the current 12km South Asia Model, and to implement it on the upgraded IBM in 2012-13. This will involve introducing, developing and measuring the benefit of data assimilation to such a model. The postholder may also be involved in work on the global model with a bearing on the performance of nested Crisis Area Models.

Specific job purpose

To develop, test and support regional data assimilation capabilities for defence purposes.
