The Institute of Environmental Physics and Remote Sensing at the University
of Bremen is offering a PhD position (TVL 13, 50%), starting on January 1st,
2012 for the duration of three years in the field of

                                    Retrieval of vertical profiles from
ground-based MAX-DOAS observations

The Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen has been
operating ground-based instruments for remote sensing measurements of
atmospheric trace gases at several stations since 1995. The method used is
based on the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) of
scattered sunlight and allows the detection of a number of tropospheric
trace gases and also the retrieval of their vertical distribution at low

In the framework of the EU project NORS, the operation of the measurements
is to be continued and the data analysis to be improved. In particular the
retrieval of vertical profiles should be refined and the ability of a new
generation of instruments observing in many directions should be exploited.
This work builds on existing instruments, data, and algorithms, and will be
executed in close collaboration with other members of the working group.

? A Master or Diploma in Physics or a related discipline
? Very good knowledge in at least one higher programming language
? Interest in data analysis and atmospheric research
? Good knowledge in spoken and written German and / or English
? Good knowledge and experience in at least one of the following
fields: physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, meteorology, remote sensing
of atmospheric composition, radiative transfer, inversion theory

The Institute of Environmental Physics offers a friendly working atmosphere
and excellent working environment. The position is integrated into the
international NORS project.

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female
employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of
equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to
disabled persons.
