Scientific software development position at CMCC Bologna

A position in scientific software development is available at Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC), Bologna, Italy.  The position will be part of the CMCC Numerical Application and Scenarios (ANS) Division within the Research Group “Ocean Forecasting”.

Starting date and length of contract
Applications are accepted now until the position is filled and start may be within one-two months after acceptance. The position is one-year renewable for two more years.

Working environment
The CMCC is a non-profit organization for research and applications in the field of climate change ( It is located in Lecce (headquarters), Bologna, Venice, Capua, Sassari, Milan and Benevento. The ANS division focuses on numerical simulations and theoretical studies of the climate variability. Within the ANS a research group “Ocean Forecasting” has been formed in order to develop a complex numerical model and data assimilation system for the future operational production of global oceanographic analyses and forecasts at a very high resolution. The group will construct and implement novel technical and scientific solutions that will fully exploit large computational resources.
Work description
The main duties will be to write scientific software and implement it on a massively parallel supercomputer, and contribute to the operational production, monitoring and evaluation of global ocean forecasts. 
Academic Background and Qualifications
The candidates should have a university degree in mathematical, physical or other related natural disciplines and engineering. Knowledge of Unix, Fortran is required. Experience with oceanographic, atmospheric fluid dynamics models and data assimilation with MPI will be considered a plus. The candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop numerical codes from mathematical equations. A minimum of 5 years working experience is required.
