PhD Student position in Switzerland on Particulate Matter For the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry at the Paul Scherrer Institute we are looking for a PhD Student in Chemical Composition of Particulate Matter. In the EU project ACTRIS (Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace gases Research InfraStructure Network) you will perform measurements with an aerosol mass spectrometer to continuously monitor ammonium, nitrate, sulfate, and the organic mass during one year. Additional responsibilities include the measurements of black carbon. In an initial phase, the instrument needs to be tested and eventually improved for the use at high altitude. Using advanced statistical methods, backward trajectory analyses, the sources and the aging of the organics shall be studied. A multi-disciplinary analysis approach including chemistry and meteorology. Additional measurements will be performed in parallel at more than 10 sites in Europe allowing for comparisons and integration of data to a bigger picture. Intensive collaborations with many teams in Europe will be crucial for the success of the project.
