SENIOR OR PRINCIPAL COASTAL ANALYST / ENGINEER (UK)

JBA Consulting is one of the leading consultancies in flood and environmental risk management in the UK and Ireland.  We are currently seeking an experienced scientist or engineer to join our Coastal Risk Management team.  The focus of this team is the marine environment and its risks (flooding, erosion) and opportunities (engineering, tidal stream and wave technologies).  We work for a wide range of clients in the UK and abroad, including government, NGOs, insurers and reinsurers, risk management firms and developers.  Our team has a strong focus on R&D and the development of innovative analysis and modelling technique

The Position:

The successful candidate for this post will be expected to perform as a technical specialist and a project/resource manager.  Experience with respect to business development will also be beneficial.  The successful candidate is expected to be based in either our Haywards Heath office or our Skipton office in England.  It will also be necessary to visit our other offices in the UK and Ireland.  A reasonable amount of additional client related travel is expected.

Qualifications and Experience:

Applicants are expected to have an MSc or PhD in Oceanography, Civil or Offshore Engineering or another relevant Geo-science.  Chartered status (CIWEM, ICE) is desirable. Applicants should have a strong and broad technical background with at least five years’ experience in a relevant position.  Expertise with respect to some or all of the following is required:

●          Coastal flood defence design and engineering;

●          Coastal geomorphology (coastal erosion analysis, erosion management, beach management);

●          Development of Shoreline Management Plans;

●          Numerical modelling (e.g., sediment transport modelling, flood inundation, wave transformation, wave overtopping, water quality);

●          Extreme sea level and wave analysis;

●          Flood forecasting;

●          Climate change;

●          Wave and tidal-stream energy technology.

Of particular importance for this position is experience with respect to coastal flood defence design and engineering, including beach design and management.  Expertise with respect to coastal geomorphology and the development of Shoreline Management Plans are other key assets.  JBA Consulting is a heavily client focused organisation.  Excellent report writing and effective communication skills are therefore essential to this role.  Self motivation and a high degree of organisation are also essential.

The Location:

The successful candidate is expected to be based in either our Skipton office or our Haywards Heath office.  Residence at one of our other offices will also be considered for strong candidates.  In any case, it will be necessary for the successful candidate to be based in our Skipton office for an initial period of employment to develop links with and to ensure continuity of practices with our core coastal team (whose centre of excellence is based in Skipton).

A competitive salary is available together with a comprehensive benefits package including personal pension, life insurance, medical assistance, subsidised permanent health insurance, child care vouchers, medical/dental care assistance and profit share.

The post holder will be entitled to between 20 and 23 days holiday per year (depending on experience) rising to 25 after qualifying service, plus statutory holidays.
