Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

LOCATION: IC3 headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

ENVIRONMENT: IC3 is a newly established climate institution settled by
the Government of Catalunya and the University of Barcelona, aiming at
understanding future climate change and the dynamics and theory
underlying those changes. It has also as main interests the accurate
simulation of the interplay between climate and the biosphere and its
feedbacks and the development of seasonal-to-decadal predictability
capacities. In addition to studying processes at the global scale, IC3
will focus on the Mediterranean regions, tropical Africa, South America
and SE. Asia. IC3 will have a body of 100-125 scientists in 8-10 years
and a total staff around 200 people. Working languages of IC3 are
English, Catalan and Spanish. For details, see <>.

The conditions for enrollment are detailed below.

The research work is part of a multi-disciplinary effort conducted to
increase our understanding of the environmental conditions and changes
taking place in the high latitudes of both hemispheres and their role in
the modulation of global climate variability. A particular focus of the
candidate’s work is expected to center on investigating the role of ENSO
in the modulation of high-latitude climate and the usefulness of
extratropical predictors in the forecasting skill of El Niño. The work
of the candidate will be centered along the following research lines:

a) The study of the interaction between the tropical Pacific and the
extratropical regions of the North and South Pacific and the Indian
Ocean. The dynamics of these interactions should be conducted with both
observational products and the most up-to-date suite of dynamical and
statistical climate models.

b) To design, perform and analyze numerical simulations with an
atmosphere-ocean-sea ice model, with the aim of investigating sea-ice
processes in both the Arctic & Antarctic Oceans and their role in the
modulation of global climate variability and change.

REQUIREMENTS: The applicants are expected to hold a PhD in geophysics,
physics, meteorology or oceanography. Interest and expertise in the role
of both sea ice and high latitudes in the climate system is a
precondition as well as a thorough knowledge of Unix, Fortran90,
high-level scripting languages, and visualization tools.

REMUNERATION: Salary will be commensurate with Spanish standards for
postdoctoral contracts, starting at S12 (29.000 €/year) but higher
scales might be considered for exceptional candidates. Possibility of
extending the contract beyond the three years will be possible on the
basis of exceptional achievements, and tenure-track possibilities may be
considered only after evaluation by the Scientific Advisory Board of the
Institute at the termination of the contract. A tax free food allowance
of about 1.320 €/year is also offered.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Three years, renewable.

STARTING DATE: The position starts preferably in January-February 2012,
or as soon as possible after that date.

APPLICATIONS: The application form and aptitude test should be
downloaded from IC3's website <>. Applicants should fill in
the application form and the aptitude test and email both to
<>, indicating IC3-UDIC-2011-01 on the "Subject".

Selected final candidates should ask for three letters of recommendation
from scientists from places other than their current workplace. A letter
from the PhD advisor is encouraged. Possibility for an immediate
incorporation will be strongly considered. These letters should be
addressed to <>. IC3 is an equal opportunity employer.

Calls are open until filled. IC3 will notify the selected candidates as
soon as possible.

CLOSING DATE: Applications will be accepted until the position is
filled, and the evaluation of first candidates will start on December,
2011. Please, check at IC3's webpage the link for the status of the offer.
