Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

REFERENCE: IC3-UDIC-2011-02

LOCATION: IC3 headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

ENVIRONMENT: IC3 is a newly established climate institution settled by
the Government of Catalunya and the University of Barcelona, aiming at
understanding future climate change and the dynamics and theory
underlying those changes. It has also as main interests the accurate
simulation of the interplay between climate and the biosphere and its
feedbacks and the development of seasonal-to-decadal predictability
capacities. In addition to studying processes at the global scale, IC3
will focus on the Mediterranean regions, tropical Africa, South America
and SE. Asia. IC3 will have a body of 100-125 scientists in 8-10 years
and a total staff around 200 people. Working languages of IC3 are
English, Catalan and Spanish. For details, see <www.ic3.cat>
Within IC3, the Unit for Climate Dynamics and Impacts (UDIC) led by the
Dr. Xavier Rodó, is focusing on the improvement of the simulation of
climate impacts, particularly climate effects on health, energy, food
and the water cycle. UDIC is now seeking for a highly motivated young
scientist for the working group of climate-driven diseases. Candidates
are expected to take the lead in developing next generation of models
for Vector-Borne diseases (VBD) and waterborne diseases (WBD),
respectively and contribute to strengthen the capacities of the UDIC
group on Climate and Health. The conditions for enrollment are detailed
below:

DESCRIPTION AND MAIN DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Two year (1+1)
post-doctoral contract for improving VBD models in the framework of a
recently funded European project. The project seeks to generate accurate
seasonal-to-decadal changes in the incidence of malaria and Rift Valley
fever in African countries as well as leishmaniasis and CCHF in eastern
Mediterranean countries. The candidate is expected to collaborate with
the Climate Forecasting Unit of the institute, which takes the lead in
the generation of climate projections.

REQUIREMENTS: Skill and demonstrated ability and experience in building,
calibrating and in the validation of mathematical models (stochastic ODE
systems...) for modelling the dynamics of VBD or/and (WBD). Experience
in procedures for estimating modelling parameters (e.g. MIF methods),
will be highly valued. The candidate should have demonstrated facility
in handling large databases (especially climatic databases) and in
programming languages needed for developing code and scripts, as well as
proven skills in advanced statistics is a strong requirement. Capacity
to write proposals, manuscripts and to work with other colleagues in a
highly collaborative environment will also be valued. Flexibility for
traveling to Africa and the US when needed will be also valued.
Candidates without a demonstrated ability or a proven track of papers
where the build-up of dynamical models is central will not be considered
for this position.

REMUNERATION: Salary will be commensurate with Spanish standards for
postdoctoral contracts, starting at S12 (29.000 €/year) but higher
scales might be considered for exceptional candidates. Possibility of
extending the contract beyond the two years will be possible on the
basis of exceptional achievements, and tenure-track possibilities may be
considered only after evaluation by the Scientific Advisory Board of the
Institute at the termination of the contract.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Two years, renewable.

STARTING DATE: The position starts preferably during the last quarter of
2011, or as soon as possible after that date.

APPLICATIONS: The application form and aptitude test should be
downloaded from IC3's website <www.ic3.cat> Applicants should fill in
the application form and the aptitude test and email both to
<jobs@ic3.cat>, indicating IC3-UDIC-2011-02 on the "Subject".
Selected final candidates should ask for three letters of recommendation
from scientists from places other than their current workplace. A letter
from the PhD advisor is encouraged. Possibility for an immediate
incorporation will be strongly considered. These letters should be
addressed to <jobs@ic3.cat>. IC3 is an equal opportunity employer. Calls
are open until filled. IC3 will notify the selected candidates as soon
as possible.

CLOSING DATE: Applications will be accepted until the position is
filled, and the evaluation of first candidates will start on November,
7th, 2011. Please, check at IC3's webpage the link for the status of the
offer.
