Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

A researcher position in ocean modelling and data assimilation is open
at Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC), Bologna,
Italy (<http://www.cmcc.it/>).

The position will be part of the CMCC Numerical Application and
Scenarios (ANS) Division within the Research Group “Global Ocean and
Climate”.

The one-year position ranges from post-doc to scientist depending on the
candidate profile
(<http://www.cmcc.it/about-cmcc/job-opportunities/job-opportunities>)
and is renewable up to three years.

Work description

The new appointee will work to improve and implement a multivariate
global ocean data assimilation system to produce multi-decadal global
ocean re-analyses making use of all available in situ and satellite
data. Estimating the state of the ocean with re-analyses techniques that
meld numerical general circulation model information with observations
is a primary target both in the context of climate variability
assessment and for forecasting purposes such as the initialization of
coupled ocean–atmosphere predictions. Our aim is to improve the global
ocean assimilation system presently running in our group in order to
estimate and describe, as accurately as possible, the past state of the
ocean, to understand changes and impacts of human activities on the
oceans and provide initial conditions for the CMCC forecasting activities.

Academic Background & Qualifications

The candidates should have a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric
Sciences or related disciplines and, preferably, experience in numerical
modelling and data assimilation. A knowledge of the NEMO OGCM will be
considered a plus. Knowledge of Unix and Fortran is required, and
experience with supercomputers would be welcome. Fluency in English is
also required.

To Apply

Applicants should send by electronic mail a cover letter describing
areas of expertise and research interests and a comprehensive curriculum
vitae including names and addresses of three references to Dr. Simona
Masina <masina@bo.ingv.it>

Applications are accepted now until the position is filled.
