The Meteorology group within the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana
(http://www.fmf.uni-lj.si, http://meteo.fmf.uni-lj.si) has an opening for a 4-year PhD student position to work on the project

"Mesoscale Wind Profiles and Data Assimilation for Numerical Weather Prediction"

The project is funded by the European Space Agency. The research work is closely associated with the ESA mission ADM-Aeolus (http://www.esa.int/esaLP/ESAES62VMOC_LPadmaeolus_0.html), which would provide the first direct observations of wind profiles from space.  The work involves the application and testing of the wind retrieval software and the software application with a mesoscale NWP model.

The candidate for the position should ideally have a BSc or MSc degree in atmospheric sciences, physics or mathematics. However, candidates with degrees in all areas of the Earth system sciences and with a solid background in physics and mathematics are encouraged to apply.

The starting date is 1 January 2012 or as soon as possible after that.
The job is located in Ljubljana, one of "Europe's Most Idyllic Places To Live” (http://www.visitljubljana.si/). Working conditions and salary are competitive.

The application material required includes curriculum vitae, copy of the diploma, motivation letter and names and contact details of two individuals who may be contacted for reference letters.
Applications should be sent to Prof. Nedjeljka Žagar: nedjeljka.zagar@fmf.uni-lj.si.
Consideration of applications will start immediately and continue until the position is filled.
