Post doctoral position in aerosol lidar research

Job description

Finnish Meteorological Institute’s (FMI) Kuopio Unit is a research and
weather service unit located at the campus of the University of Eastern
Finland. Our main research focus is atmospheric aerosol particles, and
their climate and health effects.

Currently we invite applications for a post doctoral position in aerosol
lidar research. The position is for 1 year (with a possible extension)
starting from 1st January 2012 (negotiable).

FMI is operating a PollyXT Raman lidar, three scanning Halo doppler /
depol lidars and numerous Vaisala ceilometers. The Raman lidar has
collected one-year data sets from India and South Africa, and in 2011
the lidars will be deployed in Finland.

The tasks of the successful candidate, in co-operation with FMI
scientists, will include: maintenance of the lidar systems, evaluation
of the lidar and supporting data, preparing scientific publications and
retrieval algorithm development, especially automated and near real-time

Candidates must have a PhD in natural or computational sciences, ideally
in the area of atmospheric or climate sciences, physics or engineering.
In addition, strong experience of lidar data evaluation, computational
skills and fluency in English are essential for this post, and
experience with lidar microphysical retrievals algorithms is highly
desirable. We are looking to recruit a highly motivated scientist with
good communication and organizational skills who is able to carry out
independent research as well as work as a part of a team.
