The Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS)-NC is seeking an Assessment Deputy Lead Scientist – Regional Scale (Research Scholar) to work in Asheville, NC in collaboration with scientists at the NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The candidate shall work with regional teams utilizing downscaling data that will be incorporated into regional assessments and in addressing the needs of the National Climate Assessment (NCA). This position will work with partners internally as well as with regional and interagency teams to develop climate indicators on a regional level. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric, environmental sciences or related field; five years postdoctoral experience working with in situ climate related observations and global and downscaled climate model data. At least ten peer reviewed publications in the climate sciences or closely related areas. Demonstrated success in obtaining competitive grants, mentoring students and research staff, working in an interdisciplinary environment, and computer programming proficiency utilizing standard languages such as JAVA, PHP, Perl, Python, java-script, FORTRAN, C++, etc. Five years experience with UNIX/Linux systems including high performance environments. Excellent oral and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently as well as make positive team contributions. Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines. Preferred qualifications include four or more years experience performing and analyzing regional climate model simulations; more than ten peer reviewed publications in the climate sciences or closely related areas; demonstrated experience developing various climate diagnostics and inter-comparisons projects; and supervisory and/or program management experience in an interdisciplinary work environment.
