The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary centre for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognised reputation in climate modelling. Within the project MiKlip (Mittelfristige Klimaprognosen, Decadal Climate Prediction) by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) we are looking for a Project Manager (m/f, SAS2011-21) with a background in climate science and outstanding organisational and communication skills. Within the Director's research group in the department "The Ocean in the Earth System", the successful applicant will be in charge of running the MiKlip office. MiKlip is a EUR20-million, 4-year national project consisting of 35 individual sub-projects distributed over numerous German research institutions. The MiKlip Project Manager will be in charge of the organisational coordination of MiKlip. The successful candidate will work closely with the team, also hosted by MPI-M, that establishes, operates, uses, and improves the pre-operational MiKlip central decadal prediction system. Improvements to the central prediction system will arise from research across all of MiKlip, organised through 4 Research Modules. The Project Manager will work with the MiKlip coordinator and the Module coordinators to organise the assembly of the Module deliverables and their exploitation in the central prediction system. Moreover, the Project Manager will handle all communication across MiKlip at large and between MiKlip and its partners and users. A degree in a climate-related science is required; a Ph.D. and experience in climate research or project management are desired. Further essential skills are the ability and desire to work as part of a team and the ability to communicate in both German and English to the funding body and the participating scientists. Extensive domestic and some international travel are part of the duties. The MPI-M is located in the heart of one of Europe's most liveable and vibrant cities. It provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. For further information, please contact the MiKlip coordinator, Prof. Jochem Marotzke (jochem.marotzke(at)zmaw.de), or Dr. Wolfgang Mueller (wolfgang.mueller(at)zmaw.de). Applications should be forwarded to the address indicated below. The positions are initially offered for three years starting immediately, with the possibility of one year's extension. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E13), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. The selection process will start on 30 September 2011 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two references via E-Mail: firstname.lastname@example.org (pdf-attachments max. 2 MB only), or by post to: Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Administration (2011-21) Bundesstrasse 53 D-20146 Hamburg, Germany
