The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and State Climate Office at South Dakota State University, Brookings SD invites applications to fill a 12-month 100%, non-faculty exempt position as a Research Associate II Assistant State Climatologist. This position will help develop research and extension activities in the state climate office working with the climate field specialist to develop climate tools and train people on use of tools. This position is Research-Extension-Education (extramural funds) Responsibilities The candidate will serve as assistant state climatologist for South Dakota. They will primarily work on climate activities in the state climate office working with several USDA grants doing a combination of research, education and extension work. They will lead various research efforts in the climate office on climate-agriculture and climate-water interaction. They will coordinate with faculty and staff in South Dakota and other states developing and coordinating educational activities with teachers, graduate students and others for in-class and teacher education activities. They will work to develop new extension materials and work with the climate field specialist on developing and training people on climate tools for agriculture. The candidate will also create climate reports and collaborate with other staff on climate-related research. This person will also support other climate office activities including answering media and other questions and helping oversee climatic databases. They will also be a state co-coordinator for the volunteer precipitation monitoring effort (CoCoRaHS). This person should also be willing to help write grants to support part of their salary. This is a term position, subject to the availability of extramural grant funds. Minimum qualifications MS degree in climatology, meteorology, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering or a closely related field is required by date of appointment. Demonstrated experience with providing climate services, research activities, project outreach activities, including interfacing with state agencies, and the public. Experience in teaching or development of educational materials. Demonstrated collaboration and effective teamwork, interpersonal skills, and effective written and oral communications skills. 1 year of experience working with climate services. Preferred qualifications Experience with or knowledge of common Midwestern agricultural practices. Documented grant-writing ability. Experience with publications.
