Research Meteorologist

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), <> a Federal Government
Contractor is seeking to fill a position for a Research Meteorologist
supporting NOAA's  Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) at the
National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) located in Camp
Springs, MD.  The successful candidate will work at HPC’s International
Desks.   The HPC International Desks provide residence training to
operational forecasters from the Caribbean Basin, Central and South
America. The function is divided into two sections, the Tropical Desk
and the South American Desk.
The incumbent will work with the International Desk Coordinator to
improve forecast techniques in Mexico, Central America, South America
and the island nations of the Caribbean, WMO Regional Associations III
and IV (RAIII and RAIV).


*Responsible for acting as a bridge between research, academia, and
operations, allowing the international community to put into practice
new concepts.
*Assist with weather-forecast model evaluation across the region,
helping identify shortfalls in the guidance that could have an impact on
regional operations.
*Identify and test methodologies for improving weather forecasts with a
focus on high-impact events, such as hurricanes, severe weather, and
flash floods.  These techniques will be tested in real time by the
visiting forecasters from RAIII and RAIV training at the International
*Responsible for focusing on areas especially vulnerable to weather
events, such as Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
*Working with the meteorological services of other countries when
significant weather events are expected.  The International Desk has a
working relationship with the meteorological services of most countries
in RAIII and RAIV.
*Identifying HMT-HPC products that could be applicable to RAIII and
RAIV, testing them in the International Desks, and providing training in
their use to the forecasters from RAIII and RAIV.
*Working on projects identified as a high priority by USAID/OFDA or the
International Desk Coordinator.


Required Skills:
*Applicant must have a degree in meteorology (MS preferred) or
significant experience in weather forecasting in the tropics and
*Working experience in synoptic meteorology and/or operational weather
forecasting is a must including preparation of forecast
narratives/discussions and interpretation of MetSat imagery.
*Experience with interpretation of numerical weather prediction models
is also required including but not limited to, the Global Forecast
System used at the HPC.

Desired Skills:
*Ability to speak and understand Spanish is highly desirable as the
candidate will be required to interact extensively with students from
several Spanish speaking countries and representatives of their
meteorological services.
*Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts via oral
presentations or written reports is also desirable.
?Proficiency with Unix script programming is a plus.
?Proficiency with using software in a UNIX environment is a plus.
?Knowledge of climate patterns over Regions III and IV and their
influences on
long range weather patterns is a plus.
