The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary
center for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an
internationally recognized reputation in climate modelling. The MPI-M is
currently developing a next generation earth-system model, ICON. To
strengthen these efforts we are looking for a

Scientist/Postdoc (m/f) - 2011-14 -

with a strong background in numerical modelling, high-performance computing,
interest and/or expertise in atmospheric processes, and a passion for
scientific research. The successful applicant will be part of a research team
at MPI-M working to further develop and apply ICON for climate research.
His/her initial task will be to help transform ICON from a working prototype
into a full-fledged atmospheric model.  

A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics,
engineering or a related area is required for this position. Excellent
programming skills (Fortran), experience in computational fluid dynamics and
an ability and desire to work as part of a team to help maintain a clean,
robust, and flexible source code are essential skills. Good oral and written
communication skills in English as demonstrated by a publication record are
also required.

The position is initially offered for three years, but can be extended
depending on funding and progress.  Payment will be in accordance with German
public service positions (TVoeD E13), including extensive social security
