The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate research located in Hamburg, Germany. It has an internationally recognized reputation in climate modelling. The MPI-M is currently developing a next generation earth-system model, ICON. To strengthen these efforts we are looking for a Scientist/Postdoc (m/f) - 2011-14 - with a strong background in numerical modelling, high-performance computing, interest and/or expertise in atmospheric processes, and a passion for scientific research. The successful applicant will be part of a research team at MPI-M working to further develop and apply ICON for climate research. His/her initial task will be to help transform ICON from a working prototype into a full-fledged atmospheric model. A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, engineering or a related area is required for this position. Excellent programming skills (Fortran), experience in computational fluid dynamics and an ability and desire to work as part of a team to help maintain a clean, robust, and flexible source code are essential skills. Good oral and written communication skills in English as demonstrated by a publication record are also required.
