Position Title:   Statistical Modeler for Climate downscaling

 

Open Period:    9-30 June 2011

 

Position Description:

The Statistical Modeler, reporting to the Chief Scientist, Severe Weather and Climate Information, shall undertake statistical downscaling of climate information at atoll level over the Maldives, using observations and GCM outputs and for different time slices.  He/ She shall work directly with the Chief Scientist, Severe Weather and Climate Information; Senior Climatologist; and Decision Support Tool Development Specialist.

 

Duty Station:  RIMES Regional Facility, Asian Institute of Technology campus, Pathumthani, Thailand

 

Type of Contract:

Short-term contract, with period of engagement from 18 July 2011 – 17 December 2011.  Successful applicant who demonstrates excellent performance during this period shall be considered for a longer-term engagement.

 

Remuneration and Benefits:

·        Lump sum monthly remuneration, net of tax; negotiable, commensurate with qualifications

·        Health insurance

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge:                Master’s degree in statistics/ mathematics/ meteorology/engineering

Experience:                At least one year experience in statistical downscaling of climate information.  Fresh graduates having adequate theoretical background may also be considered for the post.

Skills and Abilities:     English proficiency in communication and report writing; excellent inter-personal skills

Personal Qualities:     Strong desire to learn and undertake new challenges; a creative problem-solver; willingness to work hard; team-oriented working style

The Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES) is an international and intergovernmental organization, owned and managed by its Member States, for the generation and application of early warning information.  RIMES supports national meteorological and hydrological services of its Member States in translating products of research into operational forecast products, for providing localized weather, flood, climate, and climate change risk information.  RIMES also builds capacities of agencies of climate-sensitive sectors in translating risk information into impact outlooks, for planning and decision-making purposes for reducing disaster risks.
