PhD position for investigating atmospheric influences on space-based observations of extremely high-energy cosmic rays
Job Description: The
systematic study of extremely high-energy cosmic rays (EHECR) is very difficult
and protracted by ground-based detectors. The event rate of existing projects
is quite low, consequently, new technologies are investigated in order to
observe EHECR with high statistics. JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory
onboard the Japanese Experiment Module) is aiming for detecting EHECR from
space for the first time. An optical telescope will be attached to the Japanese
Experiment module “KIBO” at the ISS (International Space Station)
in 2015 and will remain in space for 3 to 5 years. The altitude of
In order to interprete the detected UV-fluorescence light in terms of energy deposit by EHECR-induced extensive air showers, varying atmospheric conditions like temperature, pressure, humdity and cloudiness have to be taken into account.
Primary assignment of this position will be the identification of necessary meteorological parameter for a full atmosphere-dependent reconstruction of cosmic rays. The required resolution in space and time of the variables have to be determined. Suitable satellite or model data for the designated geographical detection volume have to be applied to this field of astroparticle physics.
Qualification: Applicants should hold a qualifying degree in physics or meteorology or a related discipline (Master degree or Diploma). The successful candidate is expected to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about exploratory analyses and working in a large, international collaboration. The candidate will have to present and discuss the topic at international conferences and workshops as well as to publish the results in subject-specific journals.
Salary: The remuneration is based on Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes TV-L, E13 and specific Ph.D. conditions.

Contract duration: The position is limited to three years, two years plus one year extension.
