Forwarded from CLIMLIST... POSITION: Postdoctoral fellowship in climate models verification and downscaling DURATION/START: 1 year + 1 year (conditional on performance) Ideal starting date: May 2011. LOCATION: Most of the activities will be performed at the Department of Land Engineering, University of Cagliari, Cagliary, Italy. The candidate is expected to perform extensive scientific visits to other Italian Universities and/or to the University of Reading, Reading, UK, in order to take full benefit from the interactions with the interdisciplinary working group involved in the project. NET SALARY: around € 20'000 per year (Good in terms of the cost of life in Cagliari). Reimbursements available for travel and accommodation expenses outside Cagliari. WORK DESCRIPTION / POSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking a highly-motivated individual to join our interdisciplinary research team, based in the University of Cagliari (Italy), University of Camerino (Italy), and University of Reading (UK). The prospective postdoc will focus on the auditing several climate models and downscaling their outputs. The candidate will work mainly on the Work Package "Climate Models Auditing and Downscaling" of the CLIMB project (<www.climb-fp7.eu>), funded by the European 7th Framework Programme (FP7). CLIMB is a 4-year project in its second year of activity. During the first year we have developed some interfaces to cut and download the climate model outputs on several catchments in the Mediterranean area, and we have completed this first phase of data extraction. The candidate is expected to analyse these data and to develop and to apply auditing (intercomparison and verification) techniques on the catchments of interest for the project. Subsequently the candidate will be involved in the development and application of downscaling techniques to the variables of interest for hydrological application. The research activities are jointly supervised by Roberto Deidda (University of Cagliari, IT), Valerio Lucarini (University of Reading, UK) and Antonio Speranza (University of Camerino, IT). In such a way the candidate will benefit of the experiences of the mentors in different disciplines ranging from physics, meteorology, climate science, hydrology and statistics. REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or related discipline. Deep knowledge and research experience in either climate dynamics, statistics, or hydrology is required. As the work includes a non negligible part of programming on operational computing systems, a good knowledge of UNIX / LINUX and of programming languages, such as MATLAB or analogous software, is highly recommended.
