The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center for Climate and Earth System research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for 1 Post-Doctorate in Cloud Dynamics (2011-08) The newly founded Hans Ertel research group Clouds and Convection in the Department The Atmosphere in the Earth System will carry out fundamental research with the objective to improve our understanding of and ability to represent and predict shallow to deep convective clouds. Our group also works in closed collaboration with the German Weather Service (DWD) being affiliated to the Hans Ertel Zentrum for Weather Research, a network between German research institutions and DWD. We seek a post-doctoral scientist to explore forecast biases associated with the misrepresentations of parameterized boundary layer, cloud and convective processes. The research will involve conducting and analyzing simulations of cold air outbreaks with large-eddy simulation and numerical weather prediction models. The work will be carried out in the context of the proposed Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (WGNE) greyzone project. Applicants should have - a PhD in Meteorology, Physics, Geography, Geosciences or related fields - expertise in scientific computing, including very good programming skills (FORTRAN on Unix platforms) - experience with data analysis and atmospheric modeling - experience and/or interest in numerical weather prediction - excellent communication skills in English The position is initially offered for two years, with the possibility of an extension of 18 months, starting July 2011. Payment will be in accordance with a civil service position (TVöD E13), including extensive social security plans. Conditions of employment follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences, and those of the German civil service. For further information on the position, please contact Dr. Cathy Hohenegger (cathy.hohenegger(at)zmaw.de) and visit http://www.mpimet.mpg.de. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status. All applications (including a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of scientific degrees, and the names and contact information of two references), received before April 11th 2011 will receive full consideration. The position will remain open until filled. Please send your application, preferably by e-mail to jobs(at)vw.mpimet.mpg.de (one PDF-attachment with max. 2MB only including all documents) or by post to: Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Administration (2011-08) Bundesstrasse 53 D-20146 Hamburg, Germany
