Flagstone Reinsurance Limited is a global Reinsurance Company traded on the New York Stock Exchange focusing on specialty, property, property catastrophe and short tail casualty reinsurance.  To meet continued demands there is an immediate requirement for a Research Meteorologist to join our Global Research and Development team based in the Halifax, NS office.

 

With a background in Atmospheric Sciences, the Research Meteorologist will work with our research and analytics team, supporting various applications used in its risk assessment and reinsurance decision making processes. Managing and analyzing large amounts of data, this individual will contribute to the research, design, validation, and implementation of atmospheric hazard risk models.  

 

Qualification:

  • A degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences, ideally coupled with related work experience
  • Knowledge of numerical modeling and ensemble modeling
  • A passion for tropical meteorology and weather forecasting
  • Programming experience
  • Understanding of vendor CAT risk models will be considered an asset as well as understand how weather impacts the insurance industry
  • An established scientific network will be considered a plus.
  • Working knowledge of  MS Office, in particular Excel

 

This position will work closely with other meteorological staff and research scientists across different offices around the world and will conduct research and analytics with respect to optimizing the modeling process of natural perils and risk assessment beyond the common vendor models for all relevant CAT models.   The successful candidate must demonstrate self motivation, strong work ethic and the ability to work collaboratively within a strong team environment.   To juggle multiple projects and meet tight timelines, this individual will have solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize and multi task.

This person will likely be involved in the modification of existing in-house cat risk models and identifying new areas of focus within the business requirement.   Investigating methodologies from other risk modeling companies with the ability to improve modeling strategies and accuracy using state of the art technologies in-house will also be a requirement.
