This project will develop and exploit a three-dimensional off-line model of atmospheric chemistry and transport. The development will be done in collaboration with other NCAS staff and will produce a model suitable for use by external scientists, and which complements other NCAS and UK Earth system models. The science applications will contribute to core NCAS aims and address key issues in tropospheric/stratospheric chemistry.

You should have a PhD in Atmospheric Science or similar discipline and have a strong background in atmospheric chemical modelling with a track record of publications. You should also be competent in a wide range of relevant software.

Job Description
---------------

Main duties and responsibilities

1) Research

- Plan and carry out research on Chemical Transport Modelling (CTM) of global tropospheric/stratospheric composition within strategy defined for the project. Specifically (i) analyse data from NCAS-related field campaigns and long-term monitoring, and (ii) assess implications of new laboratory data and provide input to focus new NCAS studies.

- Perform standard CTM runs for key international model intercomparison and evaluation exercises and co-ordinate any necessary model developments.

- Report on progress and results of this research through appropriate methods, including: papers for submission to scientific journals, presentation of results at conferences, workshops and presentations to the general public if appropriate.


2) Scientific/Technical Support

- Provide scientific / technical support and expertise for atmospheric composition modelling, specifically in the area of global chemical transport modelling

- Develop code and software tools and maintain data files for core tropospheric/stratospheric CTM. Ensure model is suitable for ongoing user needs; implement improved code where necessary; respond to major user requests and assist new users

- Maintain CTM Web Pages (giving access to code, documentation, standard jobdecks news, Wiki etc)


3) Wider NCAS Activities

- Contribute to general NCAS activities, such as organisation of workshops, seminars, training, public engagement, knowledge transfer activities etc, as agreed with line manager

- Provide input for NCAS / NERC reports e.g. output performance measures, annual report etc

- Where appropriate, provide input to proposals for further research funding
