Position: Contract

Rate: € TBD per day

Start Date: May 2011

Duration: 3 years plus 2 one year options

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Consultant shall be responsible for the creating and maintaining a wide range of Web content including, static content items, news items and Web imagery/graphics which together describe and promote the operational services EUMETSAT provides. Duties shall range from the editing of text provided by colleagues to the initiation and development of new Web content utilising standard web page layouts and graphical interfaces.

In executing the tasks, the Consultant is expected to communicate with internal product and satellite system experts to gather the required input. The Consultant will also work in cooperation with other members of the Operations Department web team and the Web Service Team.

The main tasks of the Web Content Developer are to:

  • Produce and maintain Web based content (both textual and graphical) relevant to the current and future data, products and services of EUMETSAT, in particular to:
    • maintain existing and create new entries in the Product Navigator
    • support the maintenance of the “Online Training Library” and “Topical Imagery” sections of the website with the provision of new examples of satellite imagery
    • create operational service news items (Product and Service News) in a timely fashion
    • enhance and maintain Web page content describing EUMETSAT’s satellites, data and products and data access mechanisms with the aim of:
      • ensuring information integrity
      • introducing new graphical elements
      • reorganising content layout to improve readability/usability
  • Identify and support the development of further Web based services
    • Analyse web statistics to establish usage trends and to identify under used areas of the web site
    • Work with various web application developers to support user requirements preparation and to perform validation testing for new web applications
  • Contribute to enhancements to the EUMETSAT Web infrastructure
    • Support the preparation of user requirements for web site design enhancements
    • Provide version release support through validation reviews
  • Represent USD in Web Service Team meetings and related cross-organisational web activities
  • Execute tasks and deliverables according to EUMETSAT working practices, standards and guidelines, and support the maintenance of these practices and standards.

Profile

The consultant will have several years’ experience in content publishing for the Web. The consultant shall preferably have a University degree. (S)he will be skilled at liaising with technical support teams and subject experts to achieve the desired web content.

The consultant is required to have:

  • Several years of experience in Web content provision
  • Experience in HTML writing and editing skills
  • Experience in working with image-based web content, using formats such as JPEG and TIFF
  • Familiarity with graphics design packages, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite & Photoshop
  • Familiarity with Web usability best practices
  • Good quality written English
  • Knowledge of MS Office
  • High-level of autonomy in working arrangements and the ability to apply initiative and creativity in the execution of tasks.

In addition, the following skills shall be considered an advantage:

  • Experience of using (D/X)HTML, XML/XSL, CSS, Adobe Flash, _javascript_
  • Experience in generating content for Web sites using a Content Management System
  • Experience of Search Engine Optimisation
  • Experience of providing web content for an international audience.

In addition to being highly self-motivated, the ideal Consultant will have excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.
