Hi,

Please could we advertise the following PhD project:


Understanding Northern Hemisphere land precipitation change

We are now quite confident that anthropogenic forcings were responsible for important aspects of 20th century land precipitation change. What we don't understand is why precipitation changed in the way that it did. Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes are an ideal place to study land precipitation change, because observations contain a clear climate change signal, and because the longest, most reliable surface-based records are here. Using either traditional regression-based attribution techniques or Bayesian updating, it should be possible to determine which of a set of different climate model integrations are not inconsistent with the 20th century. We can then determine which climate change forcings (e.g. greenhouse gases, man-made aerosol emissions, volcanoes etc) were responsible for observed 20th century changes and to what degree.

The project can progress in a number of directions depending on the successful student's interests.

- What are the processes that we need to understand / model in order to simulate precipitation changes successfully? (e.g. atmospheric aerosols, land-surface processes.) We know that some models simulate precipitation changes in the region well, but some definitely do not. Why? New model simulations could be made testing simulation sensitivity to different climate features. - Do our statistical constraints on the importance of different forcings feed back on our understanding of past global precipitation and temperature change and projections of the future?

The successful applicant should have or expect to achieve at least an upper second class Honours degree, or equivalent qualifications, in mathematical, physical or earth sciences.
