Three-year PhD studentship at Exeter Climate Systems (XCS) College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences University of Exeter, UKProject: "Statistical-dynamical modelling and analysis of atmospheric variability"
Exeter Climate Systems (http://www.secam.ex.ac.uk/xcs/) is a rapidly growing centre of excellence in the application of mathematics and statistics in weather and climate science. It is located within the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the University of Exeter, UK. The centre has close working affiliations with the Met Office and the Hadley Centre.
We are inviting applications for a PhD studentship to start in October 2011 on modelling and analysing atmospheric variability using data-based statistical-dynamical methods. The project will be supervised by Dr Frank Kwasniok and Professor David Stephenson. The studentship will cover tuition fees (UK/EU or international) plus a stipend at the UK Research Council rate (currently £13,590 per year) for three years. This project is one of a number which are in competition for funding. Studentships will be awarded on the basis of merit.
For informal enquiries contact Dr Frank Kwasniok at F.Kwasniok@exeter.ac.uk Project description: "Statistical-dynamical modelling and analysis of atmospheric variability"The project deals with modelling and analysis of atmospheric and climate variability using data-based statistical-dynamical models. Concepts and methods from dynamical systems theory, modern time series analysis and machine learning will be used; a focus may lie on regime-dependent modelling. Possible directions of investigation are: prediction and predictability of large-scale weather regimes; understanding the dynamics of weather regimes; prediction and predictability of large-scale extremes; prediction and predictability of seasonal climate variability; (local) complexity of the atmospheric circulation; statistical-dynamical downscaling from large-scale flow patterns to mesoscale weather elements, in particular extreme mesoscale weather events. Studied data sets may range from simple conceptual models, to intermediate-complexity atmospheric models, to reanalysis or observational data. The results from this project have potential implications for improving weather prediction.
Application criteria:The successful applicant should have or expect to achieve at least an upper second class honours degree, or equivalent qualifications, in a relevant subject such as mathematics, statistics, physics, meteorology, oceanography or climatology. The candidate should have a keen interest in the application of mathematical and statistical methods to problems in weather and climate science, and preferably some experience of programming in Matlab and/or Fortran.
