Research Fellow in Atmospheric Pollution Measurement
Schools of Chemistry and GeoSciences, University of Edinburgh

Full time, fixed term for 28 months, available from late April or by agreement.

A postdoctoral position in ground-level atmospheric composition measurement is available as part of a multi-disciplinary team from 5 UK institutions working on a £1.85M research project funded through the NERC Environmental Exposure and Health Initiative. The overall project will examine the spatial variations in health outcomes related to exposure to mixtures of air pollutants and weather in the UK, and the relationships with socio-economic inequalities. You will be responsible for integrating datasets from field measurements with existing archived atmospheric composition and meteorological data to evaluate measured versus model-simulated output at 5 km x 5 km resolution across the UK, the latter derived by colleagues using the EMEP4UK atmospheric chemistry transport model

For this post we seek an enthusiastic and self-motivated scientist with experience in air quality measurement and in the management and statistical analysis of large environmental datasets, ideally in atmospheric composition measurement. In addition to collation of existing datasets for model validation, you will be responsible for the deployment and operation of a suite of air quality monitors, including gas-sensitive semiconductor sensors, passive diffusion gas sensors, optical & gravimetric particle monitors, and condensation particle counters..

You will have demonstrable practical skills in working independently with relevant instrumentation. Strong data-handling and statistical skills are essential. A thorough understanding of urban and regional air quality issues is desirable. Ideally, you will have a PhD in atmospheric science, chemistry, or similar.

The appointment will be based at the University of Edinburgh but with frequent interaction with other institutions of the consortium, particularly the University of Strathclyde. Appointment will be on University of Edinburgh UE07 (£29,853 - £35,646).

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Mat Heal (email m.heal@ed.ac.uk, tel +44 (0)131 6504764).

For further particulars and an application form please go to www.jobs.ed.ac.uk, using job ref. 3013974, or call 0131 650 2511 for an application pack. Closing date 23rd February 2011.
