A 2 year post funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, starting 1 May 2011 or as soon as possible thereafter, is available to work with Drs Jean Reinaud and Richard Scott and Professor David Dritschel. The project will investigate the stability and interactions of vortices, of the type commonly observed in the atmosphere and oceans. In particular, the project will examine the effects of nonlinear fluid motions beyond the traditional `quasi-geostrophic' approximation. The project will involve a combination of rigorous mathematical analysis and state-of-the-art computational techniques. Candidates must have a PhD in Applied Mathematics or a related subject area by the project start date, together with a strong background in both geophysical fluid dynamics and numerical computation (a good knowledge of FORTRAN is required). The project will involve international collaboration with groups in Australia, Germany and Spain, and some travel is expected. Informal enquiries may be addressed to Drs Jean Reinaud (firstname.lastname@example.org), Richard Scott (email@example.com), or Professor David Dritschel (firstname.lastname@example.org). Interview Date: 7 March 2011 Ref No: SK7773 Closing Date: 18 February 2011 Further Particulars: SK7773 FPS
